The opening round of the European Ladies Championship was held last weekend in Coazze, Northern Italy . There was a wide range of terrain from rock steps, root banks, steep climbs and some nasty drop offs! MRS Sherco rider, Becky Cook aided by her new minder for this year, Craig Talbot was determined to put in a good result after her recent poor showings at the British Championship. She started off well as she was the first rider to clean section one after seeing many struggle and fail, with even Laia Sanz taking a dab she decided to go for the more direct route straight up the loose steep climb. Section two saw some questionable marking for Becky as only three feet ever went down on this section but a three and a two were punched on her score card! The next two sections went well cleaning the big rock faces and large undercut drops where many fived, after that there were only odd marks being lost due to loss of balance and Italian observing! Becky felt that the second lap went a lot better although her punch card was one more than the first, she was happy with second place losing nineteen marks well in front of fellow Brit, Joanne Coles on thirty six. However, Becky knows there is still plenty of work to do if she is going to beat winner, Laia Sanz who dropped just two marks.
Becky also rode in Sunday’s event in the International class against the men. The sections were quite a bit harder but after a nervous start she slowly improved and rode much more confidently in the technical sections to take the win much to her surprise!
Becky’s next event will be the third round of the British Ladies Championship next weekend at Lincoln.
